Founded in the late 1970s by the late Bill Collings in Texas, Collings Guitars is the flagship of American manufacturing. While the brand now uses modern manufacturing processes, it makes no compromises: every element is carefully selected and every detail is given special attention, so much so that the quality of the models produced systematically exceeds that of the most renowned Custom Shops.
Let's look at the technical details first: a solid torrefied Adirondack top, which on our model has an ultra-tight grain, which seems to give it a little more sustain than the norm, and a back and sides made of Cocobolo, a Central American redwood whose dense and hard texture promotes a warm and harmonically rich resonance. We asked Collings to build a guitar with Cocobolo because the combination of Cocobolo and Adirondack further enhances the impression of rich overtones, and we were not disappointed with the result.
The neck is made of Honduras mahogany, and the fingerboard is made of ebony. The bridge is also made of ebony, and is particularly resistant to tension, thus maintaining a perfect tuning even after hours of playing. The bone saddles complete the set, allowing a great precision in the adjustments and a perfect intonation. The profile of the guitar changes depending on where you are playing: at the top, it is D-shaped, at the bottom, it is soft V-shaped, and the compensated radius adds to the comfort you feel from the very first moments. Indeed, this geometry allows the hand to easily find an ideal position to fret the strings depending on the type of play. Thanks to this hybrid profile, the low chords do not tense the thumb, and the high notes do not tire the wrist.
The sound is absolutely royal. The nitro varnish is very thin, and allows the woods to breathe, which is immediately noticeable: the mids are particularly rich, the basses are well defined, and the highs, present, remain soft. The only drawback of this guitar is that there is no other guitar able to compete with it, and once you've played it and heard what it sounds like, it becomes difficult to appreciate anything else.
