Gibson has forever engraved its name in the hall of fame of guitar, from jazz to rock, blues and metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company has revolutionized the guitar world with technical and aesthetic innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors like Charlie Christian and Slash, or Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson crosses the ages and musical styles, and stands out as a must-have brand of guitar, both electric and acoustic.

The Gibson Les Paul Slash Signature family continues to grow, with this beautiful version featuring a November Burst finish (which is really a Tobacco Burst renamed for the occasion). The specs are those of the Slash Signature models of the last few years, with of course a mahogany body with a flamed AAA maple top, a mahogany neck with a vintage 50's profile, a rosewood fingerboard with a 12" radius, and a pair of Custom Burstbucker Alnico II humbuckers.

Slash has never had a problem with the weight of the Les Paul, and would apparently even prefer the denser ones. So it's a guitar that's more on the heavy side, but that won't be a major problem for players, who will get used to it over time. The maple top is beautiful, and the November Burst shows some splendid tiger stripes. The neck is quite thick, as the gentleman with the top hat prefers a "baseball bat" type profile. So it's a pretty special guitar, which requires preferences that match those of the brand ambassador. But if that's the case for you, you'll be delighted.

Until the mid-2010s, Slash used to replace the pickups on his Les Pauls with PAF copies by Seymour Duncan. But marketing is king, and Gibson made the necessary efforts to copy these copies (you'll admit that it is quite funny), in order to satisfy the guitar hero. It is obviously very successful, since the Custom Burstbucker Alnico II are now fitted on all Gibson Les Paul Slash Signature guitars, which Mr. Slash actually uses on stage. We tested them through a multitude of amps (a Fender Princeton, a Bogner Shiva, some Marshalls), and the verdict is clear: the cleans are round, quite bright, and very responsive when you change the gain on the amp or the volume on the guitar. The overdriven tones are very punchy, warm and rich in harmonics. The balance between the positions is impeccable, and the settings are so effective that you can change the tone drastically just by adjusting the pots on the guitar. It's a robust yet delicate rock machine.
