Gibson has forever engraved its name in the hall of fame of guitar, from jazz to rock, blues and metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company has revolutionized the guitar world with technical and aesthetic innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors like Charlie Christian and Slash, or Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson crosses the ages and musical styles, and stands out as a must-have brand of guitar, both electric and acoustic.

The Gibson Southern Jumbo was introduced in 1942 as a more luxurious version of the J-45. Of course, it has undergone some changes since then. The current iteration of this classic model draws from a variety of eras, but primarily from the late 1940s and early 1950s. It has a solid spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides, with some aesthetic improvements that enhance an already beautiful instrument.

The slightly thick neck profile is comfortable, with rolled edges and smooth frets. The fit and finish are excellent. Tuning this guitar is a breeze thanks to the highly robust Grover 18:1 open-back tuners. It has woody tones and a dry, airy resonance. Its dynamic response is lively and balanced. Hit the strings with a pick, and you'll get the same sound as all those records you grew up listening to. When fingerpicked, it really shines with warmth and roundness.

Our model is particularly light for instruments in its class, making it comfortable to hold both sitting and standing. Upon examination, we also got the distinct impression that the wood parts have been aged more than normal, which suggests even greater stability and in-tune maintenance than its cousins through changing weather conditions. This may be one factor that explains the lightness. In short, from the living room to the stage, and of course to the studio, this guitar will take a well-deserved place for its elegance and tonal qualities.
