Founded in 1873, Epiphone has made a name for itself by making great archtop guitars that were a great success in the 1940s and 1950s. Bought by Gibson in 1958, the company continued to innovate, however, by inventing the mini-humbucker, used on the Les Paul Deluxe and Firebird. The company made its mark on contemporary music through its use on the Beatles, John Lee Hooker, and Noel Gallagher. Gibson then gradually relocated production to Asia. The brand manufactures Gibson's emblematic models (Les Paul, SG, hollow-bodies, Explorer, Flying V, acoustic) and several original models that it offers at affordable prices. These guitars are well worth the detour for any musician who wants to broaden his tonal range or is looking for a back-up. And they are fantastic for someone who wants to learn how to play.
Although it seems to be all about big sound, this Epiphone SG Prophecy actually has more than one trick up its sleeve, as it is equipped with a pair of special Fishman Fluence humbuckers that allow for PAF sounds, modern hi-gain humbucker sounds, and single-coil pickup sounds. The ebony fingerboard provides a beautiful touch, and something deep in the bass expression. The overall finish is clean and perfect, and the Aged Vintage Gloss finish looks like it's been weathered with great elegance. Enough to take it out to the fanciest parties as well as to the gloomiest bars.
